Our story begins with George Norman Thompson, a proud Chief Boatswain’s Mate in the U.S. Navy, who served with distinction during World War II and the Korean War. A true waterman, Norman’s skill in knot-tying was essential throughout his naval career, whether aboard massive warships or small crabbing boats. Knot-tying wasn’t just part of his job—it was an art form and lifelong passion that symbolized his dedication to the sea.

After years of traveling the world with the Navy, Norman returned home to Swan Quarter in the 1960s. His house, located in the heart of town, overlooked Landing Road, a well-known gathering spot for commercial fishermen and boaters. Whether he was fishing, mending nets, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee while watching the boats come and go, Norman was a pillar of the local fishing community—always ready to share wisdom, lend a hand, or simply enjoy the coastal breeze.

Today, his legacy of hospitality lives on through his daughter, Donna Thompson Spencer, who has transformed the family home into Knots Landing Inn. Rooted in the values her mother instilled—cleanliness, friendliness, and honesty—Donna welcomes guests with true Southern hospitality.
Knots Landing Inn officially opened in September 2011, providing a much-needed refuge for those displaced by Hurricane Irene and for out-of-town responders assisting in recovery efforts. The century-old home, having weathered its share of storms, took on new life as a haven of comfort and warmth for travelers, fishermen, and visitors alike.
